Stories

Every woman and every girl inspires us. We are deeply grateful to those who have shared their stories about breakthroughs in their lives, the ways in which they have overcome fears, beliefs, or events that once kept them from connecting with their inner strength and recognizing their amazingness. Some of these stories are stories of pain and how a women or girl triumphed over it. As you read these stories, rather than focusing on the pain, choose to focus instead on the triumph and the ways that others have overcome what may once have seemed impossible to overcome. Let's celebrate their triumphs!

What Running Taught Me

I started running the fall after my daughter was born to lose a few pounds, get back in shape, and sneak in a few miles of “me” time after being home with a newborn all day. Little did I know, running would lead me down many paths...

Remembering My “Star Power”

I have been a Girls on the Run Head Coach at Ashlawn Elementary for eleven years. I first became involved with Girls on the Run when a close friend of mine – who was a Coach – asked me to serve as a Buddy Runner for one of her girls...

Weird

Weird. That mostly sums up my social life struggles growing up as a girl. Weird. My family is “weird”, my laugh is “weird”, my sense of humor is “weird” and my personality is “weird”. When I was in middle school, I thought that...

In the third grade, I was introduced to an after school program that was coming to my school. For girls in third, fourth, and fifth grade Girls On The Run was now available. When I first heard about it I thought it was just a club for running...

Mantras About Me

I am me. With all my quirks, inadequacies, faults, and mistakes. You don’t know the half of them. But I was timid, and intimidated. For a number of years. But I’m breaking free, and by example, I’m teaching others how to as well. Even...

She Had It in Her All Along

I often believe that the best way to celebrate someone’s birthday is to focus on the impact they have made on the universe. Today, I want to celebrate and say Happy Birthday to Girls on the Run. Twenty years strong and growing, this is an...

Power of the Scar

I am amazing because I’m a survivor! My story begins at a time when I was a young girl. I was raised by a single mother, and had a drug and alcohol addicted father that was in and out of my life. I never truly felt unconditional love from...

The Power of Your Voice

The narrative of a woman’s value being in her vagina, ability to do homely chores and care to the family is one that has lingered for a long time. As a girl-child, I believed this and was groomed to be womanly, to keep my modesty, to view...

Who am I? – Overcoming Low Self Esteem...

My story is a long one, but I hope you can read to the end and be inspired as you read. 🙂 Nine out of ten people that I tell I am from Manafwa District (located in the remote parts of Eastern Uganda) do not get it. They look at me with a...
