I have many GOTR stories but this one is my first! In 2016 I discovered and enthusiastically agreed to run as a SoleMate for Girls on the Run of NWI as a way to have guaranteed entry into the Chicago Marathon that same year. I had ran that race in 2001 and had been wanting to run that race again after having children. Carrying and delivering three children in two years (twins) I didn’t know I’d even be able to.
Once I signed up and created my fundraising page … the journey began!! Stepping into something new like this creates a great mixture of fear and excitement! I faced logistical and scheduling issues to fit my training in and still meet other obligations. Somethings I simply had to let go! Plus I didn’t know who would contribute so I could reach my goal and meet the financial commitment of $1,000. That’s a lot of money!
I didn’t really know what to expect and surprised by the level of support from GOTR of NWI, GOTR Chicago, and my donors who helped me raise over $1,200! Plus the running community who gave me companionship on a few long runs, along with my husband and three daughters who all showed up on race day.
Crossing that finish line in Chicago I truly felt that I had gained so much more than I actually gave that season. Dedicating a summer to training with the purpose of raising awareness and support to Girls on the Run was one of the best decisions I’ve made. A decision that I benefit from to this day.
