Nature helped me grieve

My papa passed away in 1987. I was 19 years old. I remember being a little girl of about five years and innocently asking him how he found out I was born. He replied “a little bird told me”. I never forgot that and always paid special attention to birds.

My maman passed away in 2012. She passed relatively quickly in a span of one week. She never remarried.
While in the hospital, I happened to look out of the window and there, looking right back at me on the other side of the window was a bird sitting on the window ledge. I immediately thought “this is papa sending me a message that he is waiting for maman”.

The hours passed by and the days passed by and the bird incredibly remained in his spot, sometimes flying around but not for long and not very far. He would always come back at the window.

Not long after my maman passed away, her children and some grandchildren gathered around her body in the hospital room. I happened to glance out of the window and all of a sudden there were two birds looking at me on the ledge. It gave me shivers, it made me cry and it made me smile. I think maman had joined papa and they were finally together again.

To this day, when I go for a walk, even in a city, there will often be two birds accompanying me on my walk. They fly around, they sit on wires waiting for me and when I get close, they move to the next post ahead. Sometimes they chirp, at times they’re quiet but they are usually around me. It makes me feel safe and loved and always makes me smile.
