Do the Work

Several years ago, by most people’s standards I had it all. A great career, a home, a committed relationship, dedicated to community service and I traveled some. What people didn’t see was that I was unhappy and unfulfilled. For several years, I had been avoiding admitting these feelings to myself and my body responded. I had countless surgeries for endometriosis, ovarian cysts and fibroids in a 10 year span; but just assumed that was going to be my life.

Then one day I started to read a magazine article about The Handel Method and it really resonated with me. It was all about living the life of your dreams. I struggled with what my dreams really were, but really put my money where my mouth was and began life coaching. From this work, I left my partner and career and began the discovering of who I wanted to become.

I won’t lie and tell you that transformation has been easy, especially when one is as stubborn as myself, but it has been rewarding. Building your personal integrity requires that you keep your word to yourself. You start with small promises to yourself and then build from there. Instead of using my head, I’ve used my heart to get clear on what my dreams are. I’ve done the work through coaching, spirituality, therapy, yoga and meditation.

Today, by staying connected to my dreams I have an easier time of letting go of things that get in the way of those dreams. I recently let go of a relationship because what he wanted was not in line with my dream, I’m done with settling. Life is now.

In my opinion, while doing the inner work to get clear on what you do want can be a frustrating journey, bringing light to your dark side equals freedom.
